Lysefjord extends forty-two kilometres inland from Stavanger, its walls rising more than a thousand metres above water that reaches four hundred and twenty-two metres deep in places. Carved by glacial erosion over two and a half million years, the fjord remains one of the narrowest and steepest in western Norway.
The name derives from the Old Norse *ljós*, meaning light, a reference to the pale granite that lines the gorge and reflects the low Nordic sun even in winter.
Commercial navigation began in the nineteenth century when steamers carried timber and livestock between isolated farms clinging to ledges above the water. By the nineteen-thirties, road access to the plateau above ended most waterborne commerce, and the fjord became a destination for sightseers drawn by its sheer geology. Preikestolen, the flat-topped cliff jutting six hundred and four metres above the eastern shore, appears in photographs from the nineteen-twenties onward, though the hiking trail to its summit was not cut until nineteen-eighty-four. Today the rock face is visible only from the water or from a narrow vantage on the plateau itself.
Lysefjord cruise tickets provide access to viewpoints impossible to reach by road. Electric vessels and high-speed rigid inflatable boats depart from Strandkaien in Stavanger throughout the day, following the full length of the fjord past Fantahålå cave, Vagabond's Cave—a natural overhang used by itinerant workers in the early twentieth century—and the abandoned Flørli hydroelectric station, whose four thousand four hundred and forty-four wooden steps once served as a maintenance route. The water remains cold year-round, averaging eight degrees Celsius in summer, and the cliffs shelter the surface from wind, creating mirror-like conditions on calm days.
Operators offer both silent electric cruises, which allow passengers to hear waterfalls and birdcalls, and RIB adventures that cover the route in half the time. Departures run between April and October, with the longest daylight hours in June providing the clearest views of the upper plateau. The boats do not land at Preikestolen; the rock is accessible only by a two-hour hike from the trailhead at Preikestolen fjellstue, eight kilometres inland by road.
